Knowledge Is Power

Motivating change through self-discovery.

Structured SMBG involves testing at the right frequency, right times and right situations, in order to generate useful information to support the right decision.

Many patients already test their blood glucose, yet lack the knowledge and skills to use the results to impact their lifestyle or diabetes therapy. From start to finish, emphasise the importance of your patients’ SMBG results and the value they add to your assessment of their glucose control and therapy decisions.

To gain the most from SMBG activities, make sure patients understand when and how they should test and how you will use the results.

An effective structured testing plan relies on you and your patients agreeing upon 15:

  • Goals of glycaemic control – why test?
  • When and how frequently to test
  • Blood glucose targets (fasting, pre-prandial, postprandial and bedtime)
  • How to record and share results
  • How the results will be reviewed and used.

Collecting the right data, providing the data in a structured format and analysing the data in a way that makes sense to both you and your patients facilitates patient understanding and supports interpretation of SMBG results.
